 - - White-tail, Mule Deer, Mountain Lion, Black Bear and Moose in North Idaho

Idaho Hunting

Welcome to Buckshot Outfitting. Our number one priority is providing trophy hunts for white-tail, mule deer, mountain lion, black bear and moose. No outfit can be any better than the territory on which it is operated, and that is why we've chosen this area in northern Idaho. This area harbors the habitat, age structure, genetics and nutrition necessary to consistently produce trophy animals of all species for which we offer hunts. Even in the best of areas, one essential element is necessary to insure a quality hunt; hard work. You can rest assured that many hours of this element will be invested by us long before your arrival and, of course, once you're here. We believe that there is no substitute for pre-season scouting, therefore, we're in the woods year round.

Providing quality hunts for trophy white-tail, mule deer, black bear, cougar and moose in game-rich northern Idaho
The area is located in the panhandle of northern Idaho, and consists of over 200 square miles of hunting territory. It extends north and south of Sandpoint, ID and Lake Pend'Oreille. Only 25 miles north of the area lies the Canadian border. The terrain varies from gently rolling valley bottoms to some of the steepest, most rugged country in the west. This is timber country, broken only by clear cuts, natural meadows, a few hay fields, and mountain tops above timberline. Lakes and small ponds dot the landscape, creating ideal habitat for big game.

Bonner County
This area consistently produces big white-tails, in fact, the Idaho state record typical was shot in Bonner County in 1993. Through a combination of well-scouted tree stands, still hunts, rattling and the occasional drive, you should have a good opportunity to take the buck of your dreams home. The rifle season runs from November 1 to December 1, with the peak of the rut occurring in the third week. Bow season begins August 30 and ends September 30. The areas we hunt as well as the tactics we employ will be dictated by the progression of the rut.

RIFLE BUCKS
ARCHERY BUCKS

Archery hunts
During the early season archery hunts we focus primarily on bucks that are using low-lying hay fields. We've also just begun a food-plot program and are looking forward to its results. While not exactly "patternable," deer movement does tend to be much more predictable at this time of year. We spend 2-3 hours in the trees each morning and evening and either relax or relocate stands if necessary during mid-day. The thick cover here is well-suited to bow-hunting and we're seeing some top-notch bucks (and even managing to kill a few of them). Judging by the success of the relatively few bowhunters I've taken, and the bowhunting I've done myself, the archery hunt is nearly as productive as the rifle hunt and actually more consistent.

The November rifle season requires a different approach. By this time of year big bucks' movements are dictated almost entirely by the drive to pass on their genes. We still rely on treestands and mornings and evenings are still most productive, but with the rut in full swing activity can occur at any time of day and the longer a person can stick it out in a stand the better the odds of catching a lunker in a mistake. Weather is the wild card for this hunt. If we get cold weather to increase daytime activity and/or snow to concentrate game then your biggest problem may be deciding which buck to shoot. On the other hand, if it's warm then the deer tend to stay nocturnal and just seeing one can be a challenge. We generally have snow and cold during November but the last couple of years have been warm and rainy. This has put the hurt on success rates, but the silver lining is that relatively few mature bucks were harvested, which when combined with the high survival rate from the recent mild winters should equal some excellent hunting in the years to come.

All whitetail hunts are for 6 days. Early season archery hunts are $2500 for a 2x1 hunt or $3100 for a 1x1 hunt. Trophy rifle hunts during the November rut are $2200 for a 2x1 hunt or $2800 for a 1x1 hunt.
