In 2005, Carters Pasture, with the cooperation of the State of Florida and the Florida Forever program, set aside a 3,500 acre portion of the ranch as a nature conservation easement to protect the wetlands and to insure that there will be green land that will never be developed.

Carter's Pasture earned its name before the turn of the century by raising "Cracker Cattle" and "Piney Woods Rooters". The descendants of these hogs have been crossed with Russian Boars to form the foundation of the trophy Boars found on the Ranch. The wildlife is maintained through expert management year round and is right at home among the planted pines, hardwood hammocks, and cypress swamps. The land is used for timber production and a careful balance of man and nature is maintained.

Carter's Pasture is located in the beautiful North Florida pine forrests just 30 miles north of Lake City, Florida. We offer hunting in the true Florida tradition of hospitality and sportmanship. The ranch is easily accessible by Interstate 75, Interstate 10 and US Hwy 441. International, Regional, and Private Airstrips are all located nearby.

Sika Deer originate from Asia and there are many sub-species. At Carter's Pasture Sika Deer are predominately a cross of Formosan, Manchurian, and Debowski strains. These deer are short in stature but are unexpectantly large because of their stocky build. The Sika Deer's aggressive attitude makes them a fearsome trophy who occassionally attack hunters.

Season: Year Round
Price: Does, Spikes & 3pt. Bucks - $200
4&5 pt. Bucks - $300
6, 7 & 8 pt. Bucks - $100 per point

Fallow Deer originate from Southeastern Europe's Mediterranean region. The average weight of a Fallow Deer is between 180 and 200 pounds. Thier antlers are "palmated" with numerous points. A 20 point plus Fallow Deer is common. Fallow Deer have three color phases: white, chocolate, and spotted. They win the trophy prize for the largest antlers in the world per body weight.

Season: Year Round
Price: Does, 1&2 yr. old Bucks - $200
Mature Bucks - $475
Trophy Bucks - $950

An exciting hunt involves the stalking of fierce Boar Hogs in the swamps and forests of the pasture. Sharp tusks make these Razorbacks a challenge for pistols or rifles. Prone to charging, a large Boar will be a worthy opponent.
Season: Year Round

What to Expect
You will be taken to your stand before daylight. The types of stands are ground level or tree stands...whatever your preference for the first time novice, handicapped, children, or the expierenced hunter. You will be picked up around mid-morning and will continue to hunt either safari style or stalking. After the morning hunt you will return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation before being returned to your afternoon stand by your guide. After being picked up at dark, you, and hopefully your trophy, will return to the lodge. Your trophy will be cleaned and kept in our walk-in coolers. You can have your mount delivered to our local taxidermist to be shipped to you or you can take it with you. Either way you will need an ice chest to take your game meat home.

Carter's Pasture family oriented hunting lodge has private bedrooms, baths, and sleeping lofts which are always a favorite with the children. It has a huge stone fireplace in the great room combined with the kitchen and dining area. It is "roughing it" with all the conviences of home. In the evenings you can re-live the day's events in the rocking chairs on the front porch.

Fish with a Professional Guide Service on
LAKE OKEECHOBEE & LAKE ISTOKPOGA, in Florida,
for Trophy Bass, Bluegill, Shellcracker, or Crappie.
Or Hunt for Florida White Tail Deer, Wild Boar (Hogs),
Osceola Turkey or Duck.

Scott Calhoun
I'm Scott Calhoun, a Trophy Bass Fishing and Hunting Guide. I've been fishing and hunting on beautiful Lake Okeechobee & Lake Istokpoga with my family and friends since 1965.
Calhoun's Guide Service has provided great adventures for many people over the years and we pride ourselves on being friendly and professional. We offer many different Fishing and Hunting Packages depending on how long you'll be visiting us on Lake Okeechobee.
Jeff Rummel, 10# 8oz Trophy Bass

We recommend using live Wild Shiners to catch that Trophy Bass you're looking for, but we also offer Fishing Packages using Artificials which is more economical. Whether you're a novice or an experienced angler, you'll enjoy the excitement of fishing for Bluegill, Shellcracker or Crappie during their peak season.

Calhoun's Guide Service is also a Hunting Guide Service
for Wild Boar (Hog), Osceola Turkey, Duck
and Florida White Tail Deer.
And who says Florida Deer aren't very big? The one pictured here is a far cry from small. Steve Roland came to hunt with us for a day that would prove to be the best hunting day he's ever had. Look at this Big nine-point buck killed at 4:30pm late in the season.

Our exciting Wild Boar (Hogs) with Dogs Package allows you to hunt year around on our private property using a variety of weapons.
The Kirkland Family came and spent a weekend camping out on our property. Glen & Bruce (pictured) along with their boys, James & Daniel, and Bruce’s wife, Rachel, all had a great time. We started out the first morning with a dog hunt. Glen and James both shot nice size hogs - James’ being the biggest at 320 lbs - way to go James! The next morning we did some stalking when Bruce eased up on this 200 lb Boar Hog.

Glen writes: Scott - just to let you know we made it home, and that Bruce measured the teeth and they were 3 1/4 inches long. We had the best time ever-Thanks again, Bruce, Glen, Rachel, James, Daniel-see you soon.

These “Gun Slingers” from Jacksonville came and spent a weekend Hog Hunting and camping. The first morning they had 4 Hogs including one large Boar before 7:30am! By Sunday they had a total of 12 Hogs and shot about 100 rounds in the process - ha, ha - hence the name “Gun Slingers”. A special thanks to Walt and Ron Coleman for bringing their friends to Calhoun’s Guide Service.

Walt took this Boar Hog on a previous hunt with Calhoun’s Guide Service - nice mount!

The Osceola Turkey is considered to be the "Grand Daddy" of the "GrandSlam" of Turkey Hunts and the Lake Okeechobee area is one of only a few places you can find one of these elusive birds.

Don't miss our "Airboat Rides" web page. There is nothing like a relaxing Lake Okeechobee sunset Airboat Ride after a day of fishing or hunting.

Please 'surf' our entire website by clicking on the convenient buttons to your left. If you have questions we haven't answered, please click on the "Contact" button to E-mail us or call or fax us at the numbers listed below. Although Aruba is listed as an RV Resort, they also offer lodging accommodations with King and Twin Bed availability. The rooms are clean, equipped with microwaves and include maid service each day.
When you're not fishing with us or off of the banks at Aruba RV Resort, you can enjoy a relaxing dip in Aruba's pool, play a game of horseshoes or shuffleboard or kick your heels up at the Tiki Bar.

WHAT STUFF SHOULD I BRING? No matter what time of year it is, be sure to bring plenty of sun screen and polarized sunglasses. They don't call it the Sunshine State for nothin'! A hat and rain gear are also appropriate year around. If you come during the winter, bring cold weather and warm weather clothes. We can have temperatures in the 20s and 30s one day and t-shirt and shorts weather the next. And of course don't forget your CAMERA!

All rods, reels, artificials or other tackle you'll need is included in all of our fishing packages. However, you are welcome to bring any of your own equipment or you can purchase what you need locally. Our boats have ice coolers and ice for soft drinks or food you want to bring along.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE meaning, 'big water' to the Seminole Indians, is the second largest freshwater lake in the United States after Lake Michigan and its fishing reputation matches its size. Much of the lake's 730 square miles or 450,000 acres are hidden from view by dyke, levee, or trees which screen the shore. Lake Okeechobee has a 150 mile circumference and its invisible opposite shore is more than 30 miles away. The best fishing and more than half of the action, takes place along the lake's western shore where Calhoun's Guide Service is based.

WILD SHINERS are the best live bait to use and are fished under a float or free-lined. A medium to medium-heavy rod with 14 to 20 pound test line is preferred, particularly when fishing in areas with thick vegetation or cover. Typically, the shiner is hooked with a large hook 2/0 to 5/0. Fishing with shiners is exciting and helps to increase your chance of pulling in that trophy size bass!

ARTIFICIAL FISHING is definitely the most economical way to fish but is also more of a challenge, especially to the novice angler. Plastic worms and spinner baits cast near vegetation often produce the largest number of bass.

Calhoun's Guide Service provides the artificials you will need if you choose this type of fishing package, however if you want to bring your own, we suggest the following artificials. The plastic worm is the most dependable artificial bait for largemouth bass. Bass may favor certain types depending on light conditions, so be sure to have both light and dark colors available, as well as several sizes of tapered worm weights 1/8 to 1/2 ounce. Purple "metaflake" or "red shad" worms with twirly-tails are popular, and plastic lizards can be effective as well. Spinnerbaits are very effective in spring and topwater baits are exciting to use because you will see the strike.

HOURS of OPERATION: In the winter it can get mighty cold on the lake and in the summer it can get mighty hot, so for everyone's enjoyment we split an 8 hour fishing day into two 4 hour trips.

Our morning session begins at 6am and our afternoon session at 2pm. These times may vary slightly depending on the time of year with the sunrise and sunset. The lodging offered through Calhoun's Guide Service is only 5 minutes by car from the boat landing, so you'll have plenty of time to go back to your room, get a bite to eat and either nap, swim in the pool or visit some local sightseeing spots.

WHAT TIME OF YEAR IS THE BEST TIME TO FISH? You know that bumper sticker that says "I'd Rather be Fishing"? Well that about answers that question. Seriously, the peak fishing seasons follow a pretty consistent pattern. Bass are taken year-round with the largest fish caught from December to March (the spawning season), and the most fish caught from March to June and September to November. Spec or Crappie fishing is best in the winter. Although you can catch them all year, cooler temperatures stimulate the fish to feed with a vengeance. November to May is when most Crappie are taken. During summer the Bluegills and Shellcrackers are spawning and the action is top notch. So in answer to the above question.....WHENEVER YOU GET HERE!

FISHING LICENSE: A freshwater fishing license can be purchased at Beck's Food Store where we will meet before fishing. Nonresidents pay $17.00 for a 7 day license or if you plan to visit again within 12 months, you can purchase a 12 month license for $32.00. Children under 16 years of age are exempt. Three day fishing licenses are no longer available. If you prefer, you can purchase your license ahead of time with a credit card by calling Toll Free 1-888-FISH-FLORIDA (1-888-347-4356). A $3.95 processing fee applies per transaction (not per license).

WEATHER: Florida weather can be very fickle. Some winter days will allow you to wear a t-shirt and shorts and others you'll want your warmest jacket & gloves. Spring and fall are usually in the 70s ad 80s with little rain. Summer can range from the 80s to high 90s and afternoon showers occur frequently. We suggest before you pack to check out www.weather.com and type in the zip code 33471. This will give you a 7 day forecast for our neighboring city of Moore Haven which is just 12 miles down the road.

BASS BOAT: Calhoun's Guide Service runs a 20 ft. Storm Bass Boat with a 225 hp Mercury and top of the line trolling motor. Our boat is fully compliant with U.S. Coast Guard regulations. It is also equipped with a state of the art Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) System, 3 Depth Finders and 2 Live Bait Wells. In case of a mechanical breakdown, we have a U.S. Coast Guard fully compliant back-up 18 ft. Glastron with a 115 hp Johnson.

REFUNDS: A full refund, excluding $40 per night of lodging if applicable, will be given in the event of mechanical breakdowns or extremely bad weather. If bad weather keeps you from fishing one half of a full day's trip, you will be charged for a half day at our half day rates.
