The Alabama River Lodge was constructed in 1996, and features 5,000
square feet of modern accommodations. A spacious great hall is
anchored by a brick fireplace. The kitchenette has a full bar for
snacks and refreshments. Two lounge areas offer opportunity for
private chats. Conference space is provided in the same area.
In the oldest Southern style, there is a free standing kitchen and
dining area, separating the lodge from the distractions of meal
preparation. Chicken, grilled hamburgers, gravy and biscuits, and
other country vittles are served in generous portions. No long lines
or waiting in a crowded bar. Just good food and plenty of it.
Coyote-skin Rug
Guests sleep in comfortable beds separated by full bath facilities.
Linens and towels are provided. A washer/dryer is available to guests.
The lodge can accomodate parties of thirty or more.
Take in a ball game on the satellite TV in the lounge, or relax
upstairs in your room. Wooden rockers line a spacious porch. The
occasional hoot of an owl or the howl of a coyote may interrupt the
quiet night.
Corporate and private groups can take advantage of special rates. The
lodge is perfect for retreats, parties, picnics and meetings. Meals
can be prepared on the spot by Lodge staff -- steaks are a specialty.
Or you can cook your own meals.

Guides and Staff
The guides and staff of the Alabama River Lodge want your stay to be
relaxing and enjoyable. Of course, the first priority is to get you to
your stand and ready to harvest some game! A close second is food,
rest and relaxation. The rest is up to you.

Deer Hunting
Safe Shooting Houses
Hunting is from gun houses on green field plots, and safe ladder
stands on trails, scrape lines, or rolling pasture land. At the
Alabama River Lodge, 6,000 acres are reserved for trophy-buck
harvesting only. Bucks of any size may be taken on the remaining land.
Doe tags are available for use on all the land. January is the Central
Alabama rutting season, but many outstanding bucks are harvested in
November and December.
Green fields vary from 20 to 100 acres. They serve a dual purpose as
plantings for wildlife and pasture for the Beers family cattle. The
Alabama River Lodge operators consider the food plots a unique "crop"
on the farm.
Beautiful Backwaters
The seed for food plots is selectively harvested from the farm itself.
Special nutrients and fertilizers traditionally reserved for "cash
crops" are applied to insure maximum development of the food plots and
the wildlife feeding upon them. Great Hunting!

3. Rifle/Bow, ammunition, arrows,
4. Flashlight, rain suit, waterproof boots
5. Portable stand if desired (especially for bow hunters)

7. Ice chests for taking the venison home.
8. A Great Attitude!
#break#
Bowhunting
The Alabama River Lodge is the perfect location for early season bow
hunts. The watershed and river bottom habitat provides ample forage
for deer. Locate a persimmon tree or hunt acorn flats in the morning.
In the evening, sitting inside the tree line of a green field is a
good strategy.
#break#
Turkey Hunting
Turkey season: Mid March-April 30
$400 per person per day
Imagine, 10,000 acres of mixed timber, green fields, pastures, and
meadows. Flocks with as many as 50 turkeys have been seen this winter.
That can only mean one thing: A great spring!
Leave with your guide for a morning hunt. Your guide can call for you,
help you call, or simply set you up on a gobbler. You decide. That
afternoon hunt "self-guided". Spot flocks in the fields and stalk in
close enough to call. Or cruise the ridges and try for a "shock
gobble". If you are good enough and lucky enough, you may bag one for
the record books.
Or just relax at the lodge, or wrestle the catfish, bass, and bream in
the lodge lake. Either way, a spring afternoon at the Alabama River
Lodge is sure to be enjoyable.
#break#
Wingshooting
The Alabama River Lodge also offers some of the South's finest dove
and quail hunting. Private hunts can be arranged for parties of ten or
more hunters. Groups of 75 or more can be accommodated on spacious
dove fields. Shooting is generally fast and furious.
A Typical Dove Hunt
Saturday Morning
Arrive at the lodge about 10:30. A walking tour of the lodge grounds
or a stroll around the lake is a great way to warm up. Or, maybe you
want to tackle some of the big catfish in the lake. Then, shoot clay
targets to properly prepare for the hunt. Clays are thrown to simulate
typical shots on the dove field. How many times can you shoot without
a miss?
Saturday Noon
Lunch from the grill welcomes late arrivals. You are sure to enjoy our
home-cooked burgers,
hot dogs, and fixins – and perhaps some BBQ. Let your lunch settle
while you pass a moment on our spacious front porch, complete with
swings and rocking chairs.
Around 1:30, your guides will take you to the dove fields. Please
remember to bring your own drinks and snacks! Also, a stool or bucket
is recommended for the hopefully infrequent lulls in the action. Camo
clothing is a good idea, as the birds may shy away from bright solid
colors.
Alabama has a generous dual season for doves, and the folks at the
Alabama River Lodge do their best to keep birds in the area by
planting the right crops. Millet, browntop, winter wheat, corn, and
grain sorgum are preferred foodstuff for fat Alabama doves.
Saturday Evening
What could be better after a shoot than freshly prepared dove breasts?
Our cooks prepare your game in the finest Southern fashion, with
plenty of gravy and biscuits (hand whopped) and side dishes. If you
prefer, or your game bag is a bit "light", fried chicken will be
available also.
That evening you may again enjoy relaxed conversation on the spacious
front porch, or retire to the den area for a relaxing chat. Or catch
your favorite show on the satellite television. There is a
refrigerator available in the lodge to provide ice and to chill your
beverages.
Saturday Night
Turn in to the comfort of our bunks. We can sleep up to twenty-four
comfortably. Additional facilities are available a short drive away at
minimal cost. A light continental breakfast will be provided Sunday
morning for overnight guests. Please plan to depart by 10:30 Sunday
Morning.

Vermonters Head South
Vermonters Head South

The Vermont Sportsman
July 1996
It was late January of '96, as we finished loading all our assorted
gear into the rented van and pulled out of the driveway. Myself, good
friend Forrest Bartlett and his son Tom were heading south. This hunt
had been planned almost a year in advance and it was to be my very
first "southern" deer hunt. It was a full twenty-four hours of
driving, through first rain, then sleet and snow, before we reached
our destination in southwestern Alabama. We pulled into the gravel
road that led to the camp and lodge about noon on Sunday, with a light
rain falling. This was Bojie Beer's Alabama River Lodge, located in
rural Sardis, Alabama. Huge fields stretched out in all directions,
with treelines here and there; most of the land bordering huge swamps
or red pine thickets.

The Happy New Year Buck
The Happy New Year Buck
by Tim Jonas
My first trip to the Alabama River Lodge was the last week in January
1997. Although I harvested two does and one small buck there, I had
not had the opportunity to take a trophy buck in 1997 at the lodge. I
visited the Alabama River Lodge with my friends and hunting partners,
Bub and Mark Mitchell of Charlotte, NC. Both harvested a trophy buck
during our stay at the lodge in 1997. What a thrilling experience it
was to hunt some of Alabama's prime hunting grounds and I looked
forward to the next visit all year. One could not ask for a better
facility, food, or Southern hospitality than that displayed by the
Alabama River Lodge.

Little was I to know that second year at the Alabama River Lodge would
be more memorable than my first! Hunting at the lodge is a true
pleasure for an avid deer hunter like myself. I hunt probably 50 days
a year back home in North Carolina.
I was lucky enough to harvest a nice 8 point buck with a very high
symmetrical rack on the last day of the hunt in 1995. That first year
I hunted a different stand each day out, but the next year I knew
where I wanted to hunt. I told Bojie Beers that I wanted to hunt a
clearcut where he had put me one morning the previous year. Bojie put
me in a permanent ladder stand overlooking a 4 year old pine field.
That morning I saw a nice 6 point buck in the rain around 7:30 AM.
About 10 AM I got down to do a little scouting.

Two-fer Bucks
Two-fer Bucks
by Rich Crossman
We left my home town of Winthrop, Massachusetts, a small suburb about
2 miles from Boston. The van was packed to the roof with more hunting
equipment than Cabela's has in its fall catalog, not including the
pillows, blankets and coolers for the anticipated venison, and a few
yummy Scoobie Snacks for the ride. Then shove in five extremely hyper
and excited hunters into a van stuffed tighter than a Martha Stewart
turkey and you're looking at one incredible sight. Although the van
was intricately stacked, pulling on the wrong bag could lead to an
avalanche of epic proportions. I kissed my wife Debbie good-bye and
somehow slithered into the van, pulled my blanket over my head and
attempted to get some sleep before it was my turn to drive.
It was Friday, January 12, 1996. My watch read 10:30 p.m., and the
thermometer was hovering near single digits as the wind gusts topped
out at 30 mph. I struggled to keep control of my snow thrower as I
built a wall of 12-foot-high powder around my driveway. Mists of snow
blanketed my face, and I felt like an icicle was growing from the tip
of my nose. In a few hours, I had hoped to be leaving on a trip to
Alabama for my first ever mid-winter southern whitetail hunt, and I
was feverishly struggling to dig out from the second blizzard to hit
my home town of New Freedom, Pennsylvania, during the last week. If I
couldn't do it in time to get a good night's rest, I would have to
delay, or even cancel, my trip. Well, I finished moving all the snow a
little before midnight, and made it to Alabama on schedule. I also
shot the biggest buck of my life.

Nice First Buck!
Working the Dogs.
This is a group of Happy
Hunters. Family groups and small corporate groups are our specialty.
Bear Creek Hunting Preserve offers sportsmen a unique opportunity to
hunt thousands of acres of prime hunting land in
Alabama. This fertile Alabama farm region provides an outstanding
environment for domestic farming operations. It also provides the
nutrition and habitat necessary to produce trophy whitetail bucks,
bobwhite quail and Eastern Wild Turkey.
We specialize in family groups and small corporate events. We have
guided many young hunters to their first buck or helped them bag their
first bobwhite quail. Needless to say, we consider that a privilege.
We provide hearty home c ooked meals in the comfort of our lodge.
Watch your favorite team on television by a warm fire, or take in the
country air out on the front porch.
Bear Creek Hunting Preserve is located in the heart of central Alabama
approximately 30 minutes west of Montgomery. We hunt the forests and
fields of this agriculturally rich area, where the wild game is as
diverse as it is abundant. We are bordered on the south by the Alabama
River and on the north and east by two prominent swamps…a great
combination for hunting in the South!
Our goal is to make your hunting trip enjoyable and productive. Our
commitment to quality wildlife management is evident in the rich
fields and timberland of Bear Creek Hunting Preserve. We employ a
year-round supplemental feeding program to further enhance the quality
of our coveys, flocks and herds. Come enjoy our Southern hospitality
and take home a lifetime of memories.

Comfortable Stands
Trophy Bucks
Safe Ladder Stands
Bear Creek Hunting Preserve offers white-tailed deer hunts during
December and January. We only hunt these months to better offer our
hunters an opportunity to harvest a mature buck by taking advantage of
the rut. We manage our hunting areas in order to provide our customers
with ample buck sightings and opportunity to harvest mature bucks with
above average antler development. We are on a year round habitat
management program in order to supply our deer herd with optimum
nutrition 365 days of the year. Harvest of immature bucks is avoided,
but there are plenty of opportunities to harvest mature bucks with
good antler development as well as does to fill your freezer.
Hunting is from shooting houses and ladder stands placed along
well-used deer trails and supplemental food plots. These plots are
very effective at attracting deer during this time of year since they
offer the deer a lush green source of food. Food plots offer the
opportunity to see more deer and we normally hunt these areas for the
afternoon hunt and travel lanes to and from bedding areas in the
mornings.
We harvest only mature bucks on Bear Creek to maximize growth and
antler development in our herd. During the course of the season we
harvest does in order to maintain the recommended buck-to-doe ratio.
Some very good buck are seen each year, but not harvested. These bucks
will be bigger and better next year. Taking this approach protects the
bucks from intense hunting pressure, which increases deer sightings
from year to year.
Deer hunts include food, lodging and guides to assist in recovery and
preparation of your kill.

Bent Creek Lodge, located in West Central Alabama, is home to some of
America's finest whitetail deer hunting and eastern wild turkey
hunting. Owners Leo Allen and John Lanier have turned what was once
family deer hunting land into one of the nation's top-ranked custom
turkey and deer hunting facilities. Started in 1982, Bent Creek Lodge
now has over 30,000 acres of prime Alabama deer hunting and turkey
hunting land and is located in the Sunbelt where temperatures vary.
Highs usually range from 60 degrees to 80 degrees and cold front
temperatures can dip into the 20's at night with daily highs of 30
degrees to 40 degrees. We suggest hunters layer thermals and outer
hunting apparel. Guests provide their own firearms and gear which
should include flashlights.
Bent Creek Lodge accommodates gun hunters and bow hunters. Spread out
over the 30,000 acres are 140 green fields which are rotated to keep
hunting pressure at a minimum and success to a maximum. To satisfy all
types of hunters the land is divided into two areas. They are
semi-trophy and trophy. Each day hunters choose which area they will
hunt. You may call for specific details about each area. The trophy
area includes over five miles of river front on the Tombigbee River
known as Dean Swamp. Dean Swamp has always flourished with wildlife.
Years ago, when wildlife was not plentiful elsewhere, game was trapped
here to populate other areas of the state. None of the land has ever
been open to the public.
Field transportation is provided by experienced guides in
radio-equipped vehicles; Guides pick up, weigh and dress all game.
Daily records are kept, and guides check these records along with
weather conditions and wind direction before each hunt to make sure
hunters have the best chance of seeing game. Walk-in coolers are
available to store game until departure. Morning stands are either 12
foot ladder stands or APi Lock-on stands in strategic locations such
as trails, creek crossings and acorn flats. Afternoon hunts are
usually over one of the 140 green fields that Bent Creek plants with
wheat, rye, clover or a combination of winter grasses. In the
afternoon gun hunters shoot from weather-proofed ground blinds that
are strategically placed for maximum coverage of the fields. Shots may
range from 125 to 300 yards.

Join us for the hunt of a lifetime -- at Blackbelt Hunting Lodge.
Deer Hunting
Blackbelt Hunting Lodge, in cooperation with Alabama's Department of
Conservation, employs the approved deer management program to maintain
deer density, physical condition, improve antler development and allow
the harvest of both sexes. Along with controlled hunting pressure,
this allows the hunter a better chance for a trophy whitetail deer.
All of the land is privately owned family land which has been under a
deer management program for many years. It has only recently been open
to commercial hunting. Hunting is from shooting houses and ladder
stands placed along well-used deer trails and supplemental food plots.
These plots are very effective at attracting deer since they offer the
deer a lush green source of food. Food plots offer the opportunity to
see more deer and we normally hunt these areas for the afternoon hunt
and travel lanes to and from bedding areas in the mornings
Deer hunts include food, lodging and guides to assist in recovery and
preparation of your kill.

Quail Hunting
Blackbelt Hunting Lodge now offers limited hunting of wild and
liberated bobwhite quail. Our quail season runs from October 15 thru
March 31. We offer half and whole day quail hunts with experienced
guides and well-trained dogs.
Half-day hunts usually last about 3-4 hours. Half-day hunts include
guide, dogs and a 12-bird limit. We begin our hunts at 8:30 and
usually finish up around 11:30 or 12:00 for half day hunts. Whole day
hunts have the same start time and we break for lunch around noon. We
continue the hunt as soon as all are rested and ready to go, usually
about 45 minutes to 1 hour. The afternoon hunt is usually completed
around 3:30 or 4:00 P.M. Whole day hunts include guide, dogs, lunch
and 20-bird limit. Additional birds may be harvested for a fee. We
also offer hunts "on-your-own" for those who have their own dogs.

The 2005 - 2006 hunting season will be Blue Marl's first year of
commercial hunting. In the past
there has been virtually no hunting pressure. Our family purchased
Elmered Plantation in 2003 for
the sole purpose of creating a hunting lodge where hunters can not
only come for a good hunt, but
can also have a relaxing and enjoyable time. We have just built a 6000
square-foot lodge for the
comfort of our guests. We have also constructed several year-round
food plots and implemented
a feeding program of high-quality deer feed designed to build a
healthy herd and large racks. Last
year, friends and family were able to harvest five ten-point and two
eight-point bucks, which are
pictured on our web site. We feel we have a lot to offer our hunters,
and we want them to come
back time and again to Blue Marl for their hunting trips. We will put
forth every effort for them to
have an enjoyable hunting experience so that they will do just that.

Deer Hunts
Check Out The Trophy Page!!
From Left: Kenny Pearson, John Boutwell, and Kelly Welborn
Kenny, from Statesville, NC, took this fine buck at Cedar Creek
Plantation on December 26, 2002. Kenny and Kelly were our first guests
at Cedar Creek Plantation when we started offering commercial hunts in
2002.
Management Plan
At Cedar Creek Plantation, our goal is to give you the best hunting
experience possible. The management strategies that we practice
reflect this goal. We have been intensively managing our deer herd for
the past 15 years. The first step to improving our deer herd consisted
of limiting our buck harvest to deer with 8 points and a 14 inch
inside spread. This allowed the younger bucks to walk and increased
the number of bucks that survived through deer season. The next step
we took was to increase the doe harvest in order to even out the buck
to doe ratio. For several years we shot four or five times as many
does as we did bucks. These first two steps resulted in a huge
increase in buck sightings and the size of our deer. But we didn't
stop there. We started a supplemental feeding program for the deer
using soybean feeders and year round food plots. Wildlife openings now
comprise approximately 15% of the property. Our timber management
plans have been geared to benefit to the deer herd. Timber harvests
have been limited in size to create a mosaic of habitat types. Oak
trees have been planted to add to the mast production. Most of the
pine stands are on a prescribed burn rotation to favor natural forages
that are high in protein. We plant over forty food plots in the winter
to increase the food supply. By increasing the carrying capacity
through management, we are able to hold more deer on the property and
allow them to grow to their full potential. Our 4-5 yr old bucks range
in size from 125-160 inches B&C and will weigh between 175 to 215 lbs.
At the same time, it is not unlikely to see more than a dozen deer in
a single morning or evening hunt. Our management practices have
allowed us to increase your odds of having a quality hunting
experience.
Your Hunt
As a guest at Cedar Creek Plantation, you become part of our
management strategy. The following is what can be expected on your
hunt with us:
You are allowed to take one buck and one doe a day during your hunt as
long as all bucks meet requirements.
Bucks must meet all requirements in order to be harvested. They must
have a minimum of 8 points with an inside spread of at least 14
inches. If you shoot a bucks that doesn't meet requirements, you pay a
$300 fine.
If you shoot a deer weighing less than 60 pounds, you pay a $100 fine.
When deer are this small, it is almost impossible to tell bucks from
does.
During January, no does are to be taken from green fields. By
protecting the does during the rut, you will see more deer and
increase all hunters chances of harvesting a mature buck.
You will be hunting from a mixture of ladder stands, lock on style
stands, and fully enclosed shooting houses. You can bring your own
climbing stands if you wish. Stalk hunting is not allowed.
State law requires all hunters to wear 144 sq. inches of safety orange
to and from the stand.
Absolutely No Trophy Fees!

Turkey Hunting
Picture this!
It's daybreak on a Saturday morning. The woods are coming alive and
all of nature is waking up. Suddenly you hear a crow cry out in the
distance and you instinctively freeze....Bam! The sound of a distant
gobble sends chills up your spine. You look at your guide, he's
grinning, and he motions to you to hurry and set up. Plopped down by a
large oak tree you look around. You find yourself on the edge of a
beautiful pasture with a creek swiftly flowing through a hardwood
bottom behind you. You yelp...Bam! He gobbles again. He's across the
bottom perched on a high ridge waiting for just the right moment to
depart from his throne. You hear the beat of wings and the cackles of
his hens as they float down to check you out. So you cluck to reassure
them and Bam! But wait!...that one was behind you. You yelp again just
to make sure your ears aren't playing tricks on you and Bam, Bam, Bam.
Three different gobblers, all moving your way! Which one will you
take?.....QUIT DREAMING! This is all but a dream at Cedar Creek
Plantation. The Plantation is home to a large number of birds. We are
extremely proud of our turkey flock and the quality of our gobblers.
Birds with 10 inch beards and inch and a quarter spurs are common.
Through a year-round feeding program and keeping hunting to a minimum
we have provided our turkeys with the chance to grow and multiply to
amazing numbers. You may think we're kidding in the scenario above.
We're not! We have had numerous hunts where we have heard 10 gobblers
in one morning. Though it's impossible to promise this ultimate
experience to you we can provide you with an excellent chance to
harvest a trophy bird. Either way you are sure to have the hunting
experience of a lifetime.
Morning hunts are fully guided by experienced guides that have hunted
the plantation for years and know the terrain.
Guides will do all calling for you or if you enjoy calling yourself
the guide will just sit back and assist you when you need him .
Hunters are allowed 1 bird per day.
You can combine your morning turkey hunt with an afternoon of
championship golf or a challenging hunt for wild hogs.
Turkey hunting requires lots of walking so physical endurance should
be high. If you are not able to walk a lot or just get tired, let us
know and we will make accommodations to assist you.

Quail Hunting
At Cedar Creek Plantation, one of our favorite pastimes is spending
the afternoon hunting bobwhite quail behind a fine bird dog. We've
managed our pasture lands and brush country to favor the habitat the
quail need to thrive. We have planted a mixture of cover crops for the
quail, including grain sorghum, Egyptian wheat, and partridge peas. We
also maintain brushy areas along fence rows and streams to provide
escape cover from predators. Today the wild quail population is higher
than any time in recent memory.
We offer half-day and full day hunts for the shooting enthusiast
Birds will be released on the day of your hunt to ensure a quality
hunt
Hunters will be allowed 12 birds on a half day hunt and 20 birds for a
full day hunt.
Special hunting packages are available for the quail hunter. You may
combine a half day quail hunt with any of the other hunting
opportunities at the Plantation. (Call for rates )
We also offer a Golf/Quail package that includes a round of golf at
Cambrian Ridge, the neighboring Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail course.

Hog Hunting
Notice: We are not currently booking hog hunts between now and deer
season. Our trapping and elimination efforts have reduced the hog
numbers to a level where we can't guarantee good hunting. The hogs are
still here, but we have decided to postpone commercial hog hunts for
the time being. We'll let you know when we start booking them again.
In the fall of 1996, we found the first signs of wild hogs on Cedar
Creek Plantation. It was said that they were released by a distant
hunting club, but the hogs quickly found our property to their liking.
We have found the hogs to be very resourceful. They could often be
found waiting beneath a corn feeder or with their head buried in a
trough full of soybeans. This year, they have taken to the soybeans
and the cornfields that we had planted for the deer. As you can
imagine, the hogs don't often make us happy. We responded to their
rapid growth in numbers with trapping and persistent hunting. In the
effort of trying to limit the damage done by the hogs, we have found
that hunting them makes for a challenging and exciting hunt. We have
come to realize that the hogs are here to stay. If you are interested
in an exciting and affordable hunting experience, hog hunting at Cedar
Creek Plantation is just what you need!
No bag limits and a year round season
No trophy fees
Hunts will be from a combination of ladder stands, lock on style
stands, and fully enclosed shooting houses. Stalk hunting is allowed
with assistance of a guide.
Gun or Bow hunts
No size limits
